Great composer centennials |
100 years have passed since the birth of two great composers. On December 10th Olivier Messiaen's (d. April 27, 1992) centennial was celebrated with concerts worldwide and today, December 11, it's Elliot Carter's 100th birthday. Quite remarkebly Carter is still very much active as a composer and composed no less than nine pieces last year and another seven are scheduled for next year.
Carter was encouraged by the legendary Charles Ives to become a composer. He happened to sell Carter's parents insurances. Carter studied composition in Harvard and later in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. He is by many best known for the so-called "metic-modulations" and in much of his music his fascination of metric relations and textures is very prominent.
A lot of prominent concerts were organized today to honour one of the great living composers, Mr. Elliot Carter. For more information on the composer and his anniversary, go to: www.carter100.com
