100 years have passed since the birth of two great composers. On December 10th Olivier Messiaen's (d. April 27, 1992) centennial was celebrated with concerts worldwide and today, December 11, it's Elliot Carter's 100th birthday. Quite remarkebly Carter is still very much active as a composer and composed no less than nine pieces last year and another seven are scheduled for next year.

Apocrypha, a 45 minute long composition for baroque ensemble, percussion, live electronics and mezzo-soprano, by MusMap co-founder Hugi Gudmundsson is now available on a CD. The piece was written over a two year period and has been performed live in both Holland and Iceland. The piece received the Icelandic Music Awards in 2008 and the CD has just been awarded the Kraumur Awards.
For sound examples and score excerpts, go to the MusMap Composition Database entry for Apocrypha: http://musmap.com/index.php/details/apocrypha.html
For further details about the piece and to buy the CD , go to: www.hugigudmundsson.com
A sign of what to come for MusMap users!
As mentioned above, the CD can be bought through the private website of the composer. The development team is currently working on a very exciting addition to the MusMap site which is to add the same type of store as the one being used on www.hugigudmundsson.com to all MusMap profiles. That way users will be to sell their privately published CD's, scores, educational material etc. directly through their MusMap profiles with a minimum effort and the smallest of fees. This will make distribution of classical and especially contemporary music much easier than possible today. The artits will also get a much bigger cut of the sales price than in a conventional store.
This is one of the new features which are currently being developed. The estimated launch will be in February 2009.

It is possibly one of the key elements for the future of classical and contemporary music that musicians and composers become more innovative in presenting their work to a new audience. An interesting and unusual step in that direction is the recently announced online orchestra audition on YouTube. The undiscovered talent are bidding for a place in an orchestra playing a new piece by composer Tan Dun - a piece commissioned by YouTube. An artistic advisor for the project is no other than San Francisco Symphony musical director, Michael Tilson Thomas.
