Year composed: 2000
Duration: c. 4'00"
Instrumentation: ATBB
Program Notes: This work exists in two versions. One was written simply as a gift to a dear friend, conductor Kathy McGuire. She was appointed Artistic Director of the San Francisco Gay Men’s chorus and it seemed fitting that I write a work for the group. The second is this version for a vocal quartet which includes the voice of a woman.
Its very simple structure relies on two sonorities, which are presented in their entirety at the beginning. Everything in the piece that follows is based on the content of these sonorities.
This piece is designed to be performed on its own, or as the unaccompanied centre-piece of a larger work for voices, strings, piano and percussion entitled "Requiem in a Time of Plague", which has yet to be completed.
