1. Use check-in machines whenever you can. They don't ask annoying questions and comments about how heavy or bulky your “guitar” is.
2. Get a good flight case. That may be the single most important buy of your musical career.
3. Check the airline's policy for odd-size luggage before you book the ticket.
The lowest air fare isn't necessarily the cheapest in the end. Low-fair
airlines are often more strict about regulations, have more hidden fees
and be less flexible.
4. Avoid debating with airport staff. They may get nasty on
you and that doesn't help your case. Be polite and confident in every
action and you increase the chances of getting things done your way.
5. Get a good insurance. If something happens to your
instrument the airlines only pay X amount per kilo of damaged luggage.
In other words, you get the same amount in compensation from the
airline if your 1 million dollar instrument gets smashed as you get if
your 12 kilos of dirty underware get damaged.
